Unit 2 Vocabulary, Metabolism

Vocabulary List:

  • amino acids: used in every cell of your body to build the proteins you need to survive.
  • blood vessels: a tubular structure carrying blood through the tissues and organs; a vein, artery, or capillary.
  • circulatory system: a network of the heart and blood vessels that delivers blood throughout your body.
  • cells: the smallest unit of life that makes up all living things.
  • claim: an argument that can be created based on evidence
  • digestive system: a system that is uniquely designed to turn the food you eat into nutrients, which the body uses for energy, growth and cell repair.
  • evidence: supporting statements or facts that are used to back up a claim
  • glucose: a simple sugar that is an important energy source in living organisms and is a component of many carbohydrates.
  • metabolismt :the chemical processes that occur within a living organism in order to maintain life.
  • molecules: a group of atoms that are bonded together that can help a chemical reaction take place.
  • oxygen: a colorless, odorless gas that makes up about 20% of the earth's atmosphere; humans breathe it in.
  • protein: a molecule that is made up of many amino acids
  • respiratory system: the system in our body including our lungs that helps us breathe in oxygen and expel carbon dioxide.
