Create a "QUILT" patch with an IMAGE / PICTURE that represents that Black scientist's specific contribution. At the bottom of the quilt patch we will type up and put the name of your chosen scientist and display on the wall outside the science classroom.

Today's Assignment

1. Using the links above, pick a well-known African-American in STEM.

2. Draw a picture of that person in the middle of your white sheet of paper.

3. Using the :sunray-method-, have facts about your person coming all around the picture just like in the photo above. Facts should be relevant to that person's; life, upbringing, school, major contributions, background, etc.

4. We will paint over the text in water color on Friday so please make sure you use pencil at first and then trace over with PEN to prevent smudging. Do not use markers as this will not work.

5.  50 points.

STEAM FAIR WRITE-UP, 2016

Today's Assignment: Creating your written Steam fair report.

Steps to getting there:

1. Log into your CPS google account
2. Go to the squares at the top right corner and click "Drive"
3. Go to "New"--> Google Doc
4. Title your Google Doc: Name(s), Written Report, Homeroom
5. Share your Google Doc with "chalmersscience@gmail.com" ; if any pop-ups come up, click "Yes"
6. Go back to the blog
7. Click my SAMPLE write-up template
8. Select "Ctrl + A" to highlight my whole document
9. Then select "Ctrl + C" to copy my template document
10. Go to YOUR Google Document
11. Click in your document and select "Ctrl + V" to PASTE my sample template onto your google document: My Sample Template
12. View the sample Science Fair Write-Up Here: Sample Report 6th Grade
13. You now need to start your own write-up.
14. Use your Google Presentation to COPY and PASTE information into paragraph form of your Google Doc Write-up. Yes, you will need to add some words and information to make your paragraphs sound right but if you have done your google presentation correctly the write-up should be a whole lot of copying and pasting. 
15. The write-up will make up 40% of your STEAM Fair project. 
16. Since two people can edit a document at once, it would be wise for you to divide up the sections to ensure prompt completion.

ASSIGNMENT 5, BACKGROUND RESEARCH

Key Info

Background research is necessary so that you know how to design and understand your experiment. To make a background research plan — a roadmap of the research questions you need to answer — follow these steps:

1. Identify the keywords in the question for your science fair project. Brainstorm additional keywords and concepts.
2. Use a table with the "question words" (why, how, who, what, when, where) to generate research questions from your keywords. For example:

What is the difference between a series and parallel circuit?
When does a plant grow the most, during the day or night?
Where is the focal point of a lens?
How does a java applet work?
Does a truss make a bridge stronger?
Why are moths attracted to light?
Which cleaning products kill the most bacteria?

Throw out irrelevant questions. 

CHALMERS BACKGROUND RESEARCH EXPECTATIONS:

You must have at least 5 final research questions asked and answered. These questions MUST be related to your experiment or engineering design project regarding the “science” behind your experiment. Also, think about the REAL WORLD RELEVANCY to your project. If you can’t think of one, that’s a problem!
