February 29th Assignment, ALL CLASSES

Middle School-

This assignment must be completed inside your composition notebook. All questions will be graded tomorrow when you turn in your notebooks for 5 points/question. Write down the question in your notebooks and answer the questions in the same place. 



Questions
  1. Go to www.zooniverse.org. Spend 1-3 minutes looking through the projects and then pick one that looks interesting. Write the project name below:Project Name:

Work on the project for 20 minutes. When you are finished doing some fieldwork on the project, answer the questions below. 

  1. What was your impression of it? (2-3 sentences)
  2.  Who are the researchers, what fields of science and engineering to they represent, and what do they provide? What is the role of the non-scientists/citizens in this project?
  3. What does your project monitor and how? (Hint: look for the “About” section, science section, blog section and/or similar pages of the project website to provide more detail on this.) (2-3 sentences
  4. Why are the researchers monitoring it? In other words, what does the information they collect help them make more informed decisions about? (1-2 sentences)
  5. How does this project benefit society? Say more than just that it provides knowledge. What practical purpose might it have? If the website does not give any hint, think about it and think of a way that it could possibly be used to benefit society. (2-3 sentences)
  6. Most if not all of the Zooniverse projects have a forum where citizens can discuss the project and provide feedback. You do not have to do that. Instead, think about a way that your project could be improved. What change or feature could be made to the project to improve it? (at least 2 sentences)

Create a "QUILT" patch with an IMAGE / PICTURE that represents that Black scientist's specific contribution. At the bottom of the quilt patch we will type up and put the name of your chosen scientist and display on the wall outside the science classroom.

Today's Assignment

1. Using the links above, pick a well-known African-American in STEM.

2. Draw a picture of that person in the middle of your white sheet of paper.

3. Using the :sunray-method-, have facts about your person coming all around the picture just like in the photo above. Facts should be relevant to that person's; life, upbringing, school, major contributions, background, etc.

4. We will paint over the text in water color on Friday so please make sure you use pencil at first and then trace over with PEN to prevent smudging. Do not use markers as this will not work.

5.  50 points.
