February 29th Assignment, ALL CLASSES
Middle School-
This assignment must be completed inside your
composition notebook. All questions will be graded tomorrow when you turn in
your notebooks for 5 points/question. Write down the question in your notebooks and answer the questions in the same place.
Questions
- Go to www.zooniverse.org. Spend 1-3 minutes looking through the projects and then pick one that looks interesting. Write the project name below:Project Name:
Work on the project for 20 minutes. When
you are finished doing some fieldwork on the project, answer the questions
below.
- What was your impression of it? (2-3 sentences)
- Who are the researchers, what fields of
science and engineering to they represent, and what do they provide? What
is the role of the non-scientists/citizens in this project?
- What does your project
monitor and how? (Hint: look for the “About” section, science section,
blog section and/or similar pages of the project website to provide more
detail on this.) (2-3 sentences
- Why are the researchers
monitoring it? In other words, what does the information they collect help
them make more informed decisions about? (1-2 sentences)
- How does this project
benefit society? Say more than just that it provides knowledge. What
practical purpose might it have? If the website does not give any hint,
think about it and think of a way that it could possibly be used to benefit
society. (2-3 sentences)
- Most if not all of the
Zooniverse projects have a forum where citizens can discuss the project
and provide feedback. You do not have to do that. Instead, think about a
way that your project could be improved. What change or feature could be
made to the project to improve it? (at least 2 sentences)

- Go to the squares at the top right corner and click "Drive"
- Go to "New"--> Google Doc
- Title your Google Doc: Name(s), Written Report, Homeroom
- Share your Google Doc with "chalmersscience@gmail.com" ; if any pop-ups come up, click "Yes"
- Go back to the blog
- Click my SAMPLE write-up template
- Select "Ctrl + A" to highlight my whole document
- Then select "Ctrl + C" to copy my template document
- Go to YOUR Google Document
- Click in your document and select "Ctrl + V" to PASTE my sample template onto your google document: My Sample Template
- View the sample Science Fair Write-Up Here: Sample Report 6th Grade
- You now need to start your own write-up.
- Use your Google Presentation to COPY and PASTE information into paragraph form of your Google Doc Write-up. Yes, you will need to add some words and information to make your paragraphs sound right but if you have done your google presentation correctly the write-up should be a whole lot of copying and pasting.
- The write-up will make up 40% of your STEAM Fair project.
- Since two people can edit a document at once, it would be wise for you to divide up the sections to ensure prompt completion.
Questions, see me at the table.

STEAM FAIR, Assignment 5
Your Assignment 5:
ASSIGNMENT 5, BACKGROUND RESEARCH
Key Info
Background
research is necessary so that you know how to design and understand your
experiment. To make a background research plan — a roadmap of
the research questions you need to answer — follow these steps:
- Identify the keywords in the
question for your science fair project. Brainstorm additional keywords and
concepts.
- Use a table with the
"question words" (why, how, who, what, when, where) to generate
research questions from your keywords. For example:
What is the difference between a series and parallel circuit?
When does a plant grow the most, during the day or night?
Where is the focal point of a lens?
How does a java applet work?
Does a truss make a bridge stronger?
Why are moths attracted to light?
Which cleaning products kill the most bacteria?
When does a plant grow the most, during the day or night?
Where is the focal point of a lens?
How does a java applet work?
Does a truss make a bridge stronger?
Why are moths attracted to light?
Which cleaning products kill the most bacteria?
Throw out irrelevant
questions.
CHALMERS BACKGROUND RESEARCH EXPECTATIONS:
You must have at least 5 final research
questions asked and answered. These questions MUST be related to your
experiment or engineering design project regarding the “science” behind your
experiment. Also, think about the REAL WORLD RELEVANCY to your project. If you
can’t think of one, that’s a problem!
Brainstorm questions here; then highlight your
top 5 questions and begin your research.
